By 1953 Luis Buñuel’s directorial career was resuming with greater freedom and enterprise in Mexico. After the European success of “The Children of Violence”, the Spanish director adapted the novel “Él” by Mercedes Pinto with his accomplice and regular collaborator Luis Alcoriza: more than a fictional story, it was the detailed Time.news of the terrifying ordeal experienced as a victim of a megalomaniac and extremely jealous husband who was, in reality, a severe case of paranoid delirium (Lacan showed this film to his psychiatry students as a good illustration of the disease).
