Those responsible for the drone attack on a car in Kabul, which killed ten civilians on August 29, will not be punished. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin approved a report by the Army leadership, which recommended that no disciplinary action be taken against the military personnel responsible for the airstrike. This was announced on Monday, December 13, by Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

“What we saw was a violation of procedural mechanisms, procedures, implementation. This was not the result of negligence, erroneous behavior, poor leadership,” – said the representative of the US defense department.

New Recommendations Prepared for Future Drone Attacks

In early November, General Sami Said, Inspector General of the US Air Force, noted during a briefing that “inaccuracies in the strike”, as well as “errors in reporting and disruption of communication, resulting in the deplorable death of civilians, were confirmed.”

Later, the head of US Central Command, General Kenneth McKenzie, and the head of US Special Operations Command, General Richard Clarke, presented a series of recommendations based on the Inspector General’s report for future drone attacks. At the same time, the authors of the report advised against applying any penalties to those responsible for the missile strike in August.

Terrorist attacks at Kabul airport

On the evening of August 26, two terrorist attacks were carried out in the area of the Kabul international airport named after Hamid Karzai, from where Afghans and foreign citizens were evacuated after the seizure of power in Afghanistan by the radical Islamist Taliban movement. As a result, more than 200 people died, including 13 US military personnel.

US President Joseph Biden announced on August 28 that, according to his information, another terrorist attack could take place at the Kabul airport in the near future. “The situation on the ground remains extremely dangerous and the threat of terrorist attacks on the airport remains high,” Biden said in a statement on the US evacuation mission. “Our commanders informed me that an attack is very likely in the next 24-36 hours,” he pointed out at the time.

US forces launched a drone strike on August 29, destroying a vehicle in Kabul. As a result, ten civilians died, including seven children. According to official figures, the Pentagon feared that the militants were using the vehicle for a new attack on the airport in Kabul.
