Cuenca, April 3, 2023

A total of 35 patients with sequelae of fractures, congenital injuries and orthopedic problems benefited from the traumatology and orthopedic surgery day that the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital in Cuenca and the US mission Operation Rainbow are carrying out this week.

The members of the mission are orthopedic surgeons with specialties in general orthopedics, pediatrics, trauma and hand surgery. Surgeries are performed on children, young people and adults to correct different pathologies, for example: hip dislocations and clubfoot, in children.

“The hospital has provided three operating rooms and the necessary professional staff so that our patients receive this international support, free of charge. The conferences allow attending surgical interventions while waiting and improve the quality of life of the beneficiaries”, indicated Juan Pablo Carabajo, medical director of the hospital.

“This is an opportunity to work together, sharing experiences and knowledge. We are 32 people from the brigade: surgeons, nurses, specialists and anesthesiologists. The mission has been working in Cuenca for 20 years with the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital,” said Dave Atkin, head of the Operation Rainbow mission.

The last day held was in 2019, because for reasons of the COVID-19 pandemic, its arrival was suspended for three years. Now this action is resumed, where the humanitarian organization brings with it the personnel, material and supplies for the surgeries.

The patients were recruited by the traumatology and orthopedics area of the hospital. After a thorough medical assessment, the list of beneficiaries between 4 months and 63 years of age, from the provinces of Azuay, Morona Santiago, Loja and Los Ríos, was defined.
