Former Spanish world number one Garbine Muguruza has announced that she is taking a break from tennis and will not be present on the clay and grass seasons.

Garbine Muguruza is taking an extended break from tennis which will see her miss the clay and grass season this year, the former French Open and Wimbledon champion said on Monday.

Muguruza, who won Roland-Garros in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2017, has played just four matches this year, without a win. Her last match dates back to February, at the Lyon Open, where she lost in the first round to the young Czech Linda Noskova. “Spending time with family and friends and it’s really healthy and amazing so I’m going to extend that period until the summer. So I’m going to miss the clay and grass season,” Muguruza wrote, now ranked 132, on Instagram.

Muguruza, 29, was world number one in 2017 and was still in third place at the end of 2021 when she won three WTA titles. But she suffered a dip in form last year where she never made it past the quarter-finals at any event.
