The Ministry of Consumer Protection has decided to refund the amount of 3,700 metric tons of gas brought into the country by the Litro Gas Cylinder Supply Company last Saturday as it did not meet the national standard.

The mercaptan chemical which stimulates the gas leak sensitivity should be present in about 15 percent of the gas.

Of the 3,700 metric tons of gas brought into the country, less than 15 percent was found to contain less than 15 percent of the chemical mercaptan.

Litro brought a sum of gas on board yesterday. The ship is anchored near the Colombo port.

Minister of State for Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna has stated that permission will not be granted to land substandard gas.

Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) Chairman Major General (Retd) Shantha Dissanayake has said that a case will be filed next week against two major gas suppliers in connection with disasters caused by the supply of substandard cooking gas to the market.

A team appointed by the President on the 30th of last month to investigate and resolve the explosions caused by the cooking gas leaks in different parts of the country will submit their inspection report to the President this week.
