A Dravidian from South who threatened Vivekananda – The Life of Professor Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897)

by time news

Manonmaniyam P. Sundaram Pillai composed a Tamil mother greeting song in 1891 AD as a part of his poem, Manonmaniyam. During the DMK rule in 1970, some parts of the song were shortened, and it was recognized as the Tamil Mother greeting song of the Tamil Nadu government by Karunanidhi Uttara. The song still features the greeting “Dravidanal Thirunadum,” and it’s essential to note that Sundaram Pillai solemnly enshrined the understanding of the doctrine of Dravidianism and Ariyam before Periyar’s time.

Swami Vivekananda met Pillai when he visited Thiruvananthapuram in 1892 after preaching in America. Vivekananda asked Pillai about his tribe, but he answered that he has nothing to do with it, just like how Sundaram Pillai declared before him. The relationship between Vivekananda and Sundaram Pillai was solid, and Vivekananda even sent a condolence message when Pillai passed away at the age of 42.

Sundaram Pillai was a Tamil scholar who contributed significantly to Tamil literature and drama. He was the headmaster of Tirunelveli English-Tamil Academy, which transformed into Hindu College later. He also worked as a professor of philosophy at Balarama Varmar Maharaja College, Thiruvananthapuram, and later became the Special Commissioner of Palace Department in Thiruvananthapuram Palace. Sundaram Pillai was well-versed in Indo-Western philosophy, history, archaeology, epigraphy, grammar-literature, and modern science. He wrote more than twenty books, including Natokai Bishla and Research on the period of the ancient kings of Travancore.

Sundaram Pillai had a strong desire for Tamil and emphasized its integrity. He praised the orderliness of Tamil and pointed out that the world case of Ariam has been destroyed, but it takes precedence in today’s environment. He also wrote in a letter to his friend that what is generally called Aryan philosophy and Aryan civilization has Dravidian or Tamil philosophy at its foundation.

Sundaram Pillai passed away on April 26, 1897, at the age of 42. His contribution to Tamil literature and cultural movements made him one of the foundations of the century-old Dravidian Empire and its extension, the present-day Dravidian Model Government.

Manonmaniyam P. Sundaram Pillai wrote this Tamil mother greeting song in the year 1891 AD. This song is featured in his poem Manonmaniyam. In 1970, during the DMK rule, which was an extension of the Dravidian movement, some parts were shortened and it was recognized as the Tamil Mother greeting song of the Tamil Nadu government by Karunanidhi Uttara, who was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

In this Tamil mother greeting song, the greeting Dravidanal Thirunadum is still present. Like Ariam, I congratulate you on the success of the order of the world’s work and corruption! The lines are abbreviated. Why we point this out is for those who blindly talk like herdsmen that Dravidian-Aryan was invented by the “Vanderi” “Vaduka” Dravidian crowd. Because before the departure of the Dravidian group, i.e. when Periyar was a 13-year-old boy, it was Manonmaniyam Sundaram Pillai who solemnly enshrined in his works an understanding of the doctrine of Dravidianism and Ariyam.

Swami Vivekananda is today projected as one of the symbols of Hindutva ideology. Swami Vivekananda came to Thiruvananthapuram after completing his preaching in America in 1892 AD. Then Vivekananda also meets Manonmaniyar.

Do you know what he wrote in his note book regarding this meeting?

“The other day, my good friend Vivekananda, who enjoyed talking with me, asked me what my tribe was. On another day, I would have asked the question. I told that noble friend who had come to the party as a relative in a soft voice that I have nothing to do with tribe. Manonmaniyam Sundaram Pillaiyar, the generation before Periyar, declared like this. The relationship between Vivekananda and Manonmaniyam Sundaran was solid.

That’s why

“Sundarampillai is a genius, a genius who loves virtues and conveys them to others.
It is Sundaram Pillai’s secret that the Lord will take away those who are worthy of love in a short life.
Swami Vivekananda sent a condolence message. But Swami Vivekananda also completed a life full of enlightenment at the age of 39.

K. B. It was Satsad Manonmaniyam Sundaran who asserted that the ‘Dravidian child’ referred to as ‘Dravidian child’ in his book ‘Selandaryalakari’ (Waves of Beauty) which appeared in the ninth century.

Prof. Manonmaniyam Sundaranar has entered the pages of history as one of the foundations of the century-old Dravidian Empire and its extension, the present-day Dravidian Model Government. That is why Nellai University was started during DMK regime as Manonmaniyam Sundaranar University.

Dramatic case and secular case

Song evidence is a routine

– is archetype.

The song goes on and the drama goes on

– says Pattinpalai.

Sundarampillai has shown that theater is not only for watching and enjoying, but can also be read and learned with his manonmaneeam drama.

Manonmaniyam was published in 1891, adapted from the book ‘The Secret Way’ written by Lord Lyndon.

In this book he has created a story mantra called ‘Sundaramunivar’. He created a work keeping in mind one of Professor Sundarampillai’s valued teachers, Kodakanallur Sundaraswamy.

It is not surprising that he had a penchant for Saivism and its studies, as some of his friends were Samis like Kotaka Nallur Sundaraswamy, Kaikottu Iyaru Sami, Narayanaguru, Chattambi Swami.

Prof. Sundarampillai has translated into English three books in the collection of 10 books, namely ‘Thirumurugaartuppa’ written by Bulavar Nakkirar, ‘Nedunalvadai’ and ‘Maduraikanchi’ written by Mangudi Marudanar.

They are featured in the book The Ten Tamil Ideas.

He wrote a very good study on Pathupattu in English and got it published in the Chennai Christian College magazine.

In his youth, he studied the books of Thirukkural, Mudurai, Pasamozhi, Sirupanchamulam etc. from his father, Perumalpillai, who was a Tamil scholar.

Later, he studied Tamil grammar and literature under Nagapattinam Narayanasamy Pillai, the author of the Tamil Kadal Kharamalai Adigalar.

He also read Devara Thiruvasakam clearly at a young age.

He passed his B.Sc in 1977.

In 1877, he became the headmaster of ‘Tirunelveli English-Tamil Academy’.

It was Sundarampillai who was responsible for the transformation of this educational institution into ‘Hindu College’ in later times.

After completing his master’s degree, he was appointed as a professor of philosophy at Balarama Varmar Maharaja College, Thiruvananthapuram.

After working in this college for three years, he was appointed by the King as the Special Commissioner of Palace Department in Thiruvananthapuram Palace.

In 1855, he was again appointed Head Professor of Philosophy at King’s College.

Sundarana was well versed in Indo-Western philosophy, history, archaeology, epigraphy, grammar-literature and modern science.

His research book ‘Thirujanasambandar period research’ was published in 1894.

Sundaranar has written more than twenty books such as Natokai Bishla, Research on the period of the ancient kings of Travancore.

The second edition of his Manonmaniyam was published by Prof. Vaiyapurip Pillai. It is noteworthy that this book has appeared in more than 25 successive editions

– These lines from Manonmaniyam Baiira clearly show Sundaranar’s desire for Tamil.

The author who praises the integrity of Tamil by saying, “If the world case is destroyed like Ariam, praise your orderliness, forget your actions” and not forgetting to point out that the world case of Ariam has been destroyed, it takes precedence in today’s environment.

Going a step further, on 19-12-1896, Sundaranar wrote in a letter to his friend JM Nallusamy Pillai:

“Most of what is ignorantly called Aryan Philosophy, Aryan civilization is literally Dravidianor Tamilian at the bottom”. (The irony is that what is generally called Aryan philosophy and Aryan civilization has Dravidian or Tamil philosophy at its foundation.)

The author of ‘Manonmaniyam’, Professor B. Sundaram Pillai is a graduate of ‘Irao Bahadur’.

His son Natarasha Pillai was later the Minister of Kerala.

On Monday 26th April 1897, Professor Sundaranar passed away in his 42nd year.
