Likud’s Criticism of Ben Gabir: Supporting National Guard but Opposing Minister’s Control

by time news

MK Tali Gottlieb expressed her opposition to the subordination of the National Guard under the Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gabir. According to her, while the Minister outlines policy and takes care of the budget, he should not give direct action instructions to the National Guard. She also opposed the establishment of the National Guard, saying that it could be harmful. Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai supports the proposal to establish a National Guard, but he believes it should be part of the police and subordinate to it. He warned that separating it from the police could lead to a heavy price, harm personal security, waste resources, and lead to disintegration within the police force. He also emphasized the need to preserve the independence of the police. Additionally, he warned the Minister that the establishment of the National Guard could severely damage the functioning of the internal security systems in the country and the ability of the police to exercise their responsibilities.

MK Tali Gottlieb Today (Tuesday) expressed opposition to the subordination of the National Guard under the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gabir.

“A minister in the government outlines policy, enacts regulations, prioritizes tasks, takes care of an adequate budget, is responsible for carrying out his ministry’s policy, but he does not give direct action instructions. This is my position. Just as the Minister of Justice does not give work instructions to prosecutors, so the Minister of National Security will not give An instruction to the police. Yes to the National Guard, not to subordinate it to the minister,” she wrote.

Earlier today, Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai repeated his warnings and clarified that he supports Minister Itamar Ben Gabir’s proposal to establish a National Guard, but in his opinion it should be part of the police and subordinate to it. “It is no secret that I expressed my professional reservations and warned the Minister of National Security , because the establishment of a national guard that will be subordinated to his office is an unnecessary move that will lead to a very heavy price, to the point of harming the personal security of the citizens. I clarified that the need to establish a new and separate body from the Israel Police is not clear and may harm the operational capabilities of all internal security systems in the country. For the avoidance of doubt – I say, National Guard yes, establishing another security body parallel to the Israel Police – no,” said Shabtai.

“A National Guard under the Israel Police will never find itself in conflict with the law, but instead serves it. Any disconnection from the collapse of police control and command will be a destruction of personal security, a waste of resources and a disintegration of the Israel Police from within, both at the level of building the force and in its operation,” he added. “I will continue to work to preserve the independence of the police and to be the only controlling body in the country, in the field of internal security. That is, one procedure, one command, one information and intelligence system.” clarified.
