In 2011, when the ADMK came to power under the leadership of Jayalalithaa, ‘Thoppu’ Venkatachalam was appointed as the Minister of Revenue and Environment. He won the Perundurai constituency and became influential in the area.
After the death of Jayalalithaa, despite losing importance in the party, he sought a seat to contest in Perundurai constituency in 2021; Opportunity denied.
Subsequently, he sided with the ruling party DMK. With the aim of strengthening the Kongu region, he was cornered by the DMK.
The move of Venkatachalam Kai as DMK’s Erode district secretary was blocked by party seniors. In addition, local leaders were also active in trying to reduce his influence.
As a result, the ADMK side is said to have come to the conclusion that ‘the DMK will not recover’ and there have been talks to bring him back. He is confused as he has received a call from the BJP side as well. It is said that at any time, ‘Thope’ Venkatachalam may switch parties.
