18 years ago, Kathleen Poole moved to Sweden from Macclesfield in northwest England with her husband. Ten years ago, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. She currently lives in a dementia home and is often visited by relatives.

The Swedish Migration Agency recently made a decision that she should be deported and moved to similar accommodation in England, far from her family.

The background to the decision is that British citizens have had to apply for residence status in Sweden after Great Britain left the EU three years ago. Kathleen’s application was rejected as she lacked proof of her assets and a valid ID.

– We did everything we could. They wanted to check mom’s bank account, but I can’t touch it because I didn’t have power of attorney. I have argued with the bank and tried but I am getting nowhere. It’s easy to be a hindsight now, son Wayne Poole has previously told GP.

Talked to the border police

The media coverage of the Kathleen Poole case upset many. Now the Swedish Migration Agency has paused the decision, Expressen reports.

– On March 24, we contacted the family because we understood that there were things to look at regarding the state of health. We then took action and spoke to the border police. On the fourth of April, we made a decision on inhibition, that is, on stopping the case, says Jesper Tengroth, press manager at the Migration Agency to Expressen.

Now the authority will await new documentation from Kathleen Poole’s attorney and then a new decision will be made.
