Although Palm Sunday is a Catholic church celebration, it is also a wonderful and colorful folklore festival that attracts many tourists every year, also from abroad.
Beautiful Kurpie palm trees could be admired on Sunday – from the very morning – in the historic wooden church of St. st. Anna and on the square in front of the temple. Many of them were even 10 meters high! Most of them were twisted from colorful papers, twigs of local trees and undergrowth.
On this occasion, local folk artists presented and sold their output. These were e.g. sculptures, ritual bread, cut-outs, Easter eggs and hearts – decorations that used to be hung in village huts and resembled chandeliers. Both before and after the service, performances of folk bands took place in the square next to the Volunteer Fire Brigade station. There were also stalls where you could buy local dishes and Kurpie souvenirs.

The Łyse Commune is located on the sandy Kurpie Plain, 160 km north of Warsaw, in the Masovian Voivodeship. It consists of 22 villages inhabited by over 8,000 people. residents. In the central part of the commune, a large complex of swamps has been preserved, which are the remnants of Lake Krusko. The Łyse commune is an area of still living Kurpie traditions. There you can still find a colorful, traditional costume, dialect in everyday use, numerous rituals related to the seasons, agriculture, and gathering.
This year’s distinction and awards for wonderful palm trees went to: for the first place in the amount of PLN 1,200 — Emilia Potaś i Mariola Kuśmierczyk; for the second place in the amount of PLN 1,000 — Halina Maria Nosek i Julia Kowalczyk; for the third place in the amount of PLN 900 — Angelika Saciłowska, Aleksander Nurczyk, Malgorzata Bacławska, Danuta Ejdys i Aleksander Kusmierczyk.
