Ramesh Chennithala said that the minister’s pressure on the Chancellor, who is also the Governor, to sabotage the appointment process of the Vice Chancellor of Kannur University and to re-appoint his current Vice Chancellor beyond the age limit under the University Act was a serious breach of oath, abuse of power, corruption and nepotism.

Serious allegations against universities in the state have been coming out in the last few days along with the evidence. The Governor, who is also the Chancellor, enumerated the political interference in the universities and wrote a letter to the Chief Minister stating that he could not proceed in the same manner.

For the first time in the history of Kerala, a Governor is submitting a letter to the Chief Minister stating that the Chancellor’s post is being vacated immediately in protest of the government’s political interference in the affairs of the universities.

What the governor says in the letter is shocking. The most important of these is the re-appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of Kannur University.

According to the letter, the minister asked the governor to rescind the notification issued by the search committee on 27.10.2021 and reappoint the current vice chancellor Dr Gopinath Raveendran as vice chancellor for four years. In the same way, the notification constituted by the search committee was withdrawn on the same day through a special gazette notification. On the same day (22.11.2021) the Minister submitted another letter (DO Letter No. 401/2021 / M (H.Edn & SJ) dated 22/11/2021 to the Governor.

In a letter once again requesting that Dr. Gopinath Raveendran be re-appointed, ‘As Pro Chancellor of Kannur University, I consider it my privilege to propose the name of Dr Gopinath Raveendran, to be reappointed as Vice Chancellor of Kannur University for a second consecutive term beginning from 24 -11-2021 ‘. No law allows a minister to recommend such a person. No matter how much thought is put into what the ‘privilege’ the minister claims is.
