Will the EU influence Hungary’s election?

by time news

Orbán’s government is unlikely to receive any reconstruction aid until the new elections in April. Paris and Berlin are pushing hard on Poland, too.

The change of power in Berlin and the assumption of the EU presidency by France at the beginning of the year are not good prerequisites for the election campaign of Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orbán. Shortly before the upcoming parliamentary elections in April, a difficult situation is emerging for him. Either he gives in to the rule of law conflict with the EU or he has to justify noticeable financial losses for his country domestically.

7.2 billion euros in corona reconstruction aid are on hold. His government’s hopes of receiving at least an advance of 13 percent of the allocated amount by the end of the year have vanished recently. In January, the EU Commission also wants to sharpen the rule of law mechanism with which it can suspend further payments to Hungary.
