Gunmen have killed at least 50 people in two attacks in a village in Nigeria, officials said. The shooting took place on April 6. Three people were killed in the clash on the first day in Umogidi village, and 47 people were killed in the attack on the next day.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government, Ruben Bako, where the shocking massacre took place, disclosed the attacks in Umokudi village of Benue State.
Benue State Police confirmed the attack and said the attackers opened fire in the market. A police officer was also among the dead.

The motive for the attacks was not immediately clear, although authorities believe the two attacks were linked. Although no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, there are also suspicions that the attacks may be related to land disputes in north-central Nigeria.
Officials said they suspect enmity to be behind the shootings as local herdsmen have clashed with farmers in the area.
In that region, herdsmen of Fulani origin live by herding cattle. Farmers in the area accuse them of grazing cattle on their farms and destroying produce.

After the country’s independence, the dispute continues as herders say the area has been demarcated as grazing tracts.
Benue State, often referred to as “Nigeria’s food basket”, is one of the decades-long conflicts between farming communities and nomadic pastoralists in Nigeria’s north-west and central regions.
Due to these frequent conflicts, the state’s agricultural productivity has declined over the years. In the region, people lament that this is another ugly face of land disputes that are causing hunger and keeping people poor.
