After their perfect debut, the German ice hockey players suffered a defeat in the second round of the World Cup in Canada.
One day after the 6-2 win against Sweden, the German Ice Hockey Federation lost 3-0 to Finland in Brampton (0-2, 0-1, 0-0). Rosa Lindstedt (14th minute), Emilia Vesa (16th) and Viivi Vainikka (29th) were successful for the Finns. The Finnish team had previously outclassed France in a 14-1 win.
In the night to Monday, the players of national coach Thomas Schädler will have to deal with France, and finally on Tuesday with Hungary. The aim of the German selection is to leave two teams behind in order to safely avoid relegation. Third place in Group B with five nations would also mean entry into the quarter-finals.
In Group A, the American Abbey Murphy made history. In the USA’s 9-1 win over Switzerland, Murphy made it 1-0 after just seven seconds of play – making it the fastest goal in World Cup history. (dpa)
