FC Porto defeated rival SL Benfica by 1-2 and now has 64 points in the leaderboard, occupying second place, seven points behind Lisbon.

As ‘eagles‘ have 71 points after the 27th round of the Portuguese Championship of the first football division, with seven days to go.

For Sérgio Conceição, trainer of the dragons, at a press conference, the triumph is deserved in a game in which the blue and whites were superior in all aspects:

It was a tasty triumph. It was a six-point game between teams fighting for the same goals. We knew the importance of the game. We were within seven points. Benfica have been more regular throughout the championship, but what came to mind after the final whistle is that with this competitive attitude in certain games, I believe that today we would be in a different position. From today’s game I think there was no history. We were superior at every moment of the game, we nullified Benfica’s strengths and the result could even have been more voluminous. It was a great game for my players. They are the main culprits of this victory. The players realized that it was a very important game in the rival’s home. Then, everything that is created and talked about, in this case a weak FC Porto, as I saw before the game, a faded FC Porto and a ‘super’ Benfica. We shouldn’t take credit away from Benfica, which has had an excellent championship and in the Champions League has also given a fantastic response. We are moving towards the end and each game gains weight and dimension. If it’s too difficult now, imagine if we lost here“, underlined the Portuguese coach.

Also at a press conference, Roger Schmidt, coach of the eagles, admitted that the team did not play well:

It wasn’t a good time for us. We weren’t at our best today. The first goal didn’t help us to dominate the game as we wanted. FC Porto scored the goal, shot a lot of long balls, did very well in the second ball, and that made our task more difficult as a team. There weren’t many opportunities for both teams, but FC Porto scored the goal in the second half, we tried everything, but. at the end. we have to accept defeat. It was a good opportunity for us, in terms of the title, and it was also a great game for our supporters, now the situation is different. It’s a shame we weren’t able to play at our best. It’s a disappointment. In my opinion we have already shown this season that we can play at these important moments at the highest level. I think we know how to play under pressure and with top football, but today was not a good day. Now we have to recover quickly, remember what we have grown in the last few months, when we won many games and played high-level football. Now we have to grow from this defeat. We have to accept that today was not our day.“, concluded the German coach.

In the next round, on the 15th of April, FC Porto will host Santa Clara, while SL Benfica will travel to Chaves.
