The World Happiness Index is flawed; India’s rank is not 126: information on SBI economic paper

New Delhi: The world’s happiness index is flawed. India’s rank should have been 48 and not 126, according to a report published by the State Bank of India’s Department of Economic Research (SBI Ecorap).

The list of the happiest countries in the world has been published by the UN for the last 10 years. The Council publishes the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. It released the list for 2023 on the occasion of World Happiness Day (March 20). India is ranked 126 out of a total of 137 countries. But war-torn Ukraine ranks 92nd. And Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which are full of economic crisis, are ranked 112 and 108 respectively.

In this case, SBI Ecorap has completely rejected India’s 126th rank in the World Happiness Index. In this regard, the SBI Ecorap report said:

The top-ranking countries on the list have problems ranging from gun violence in schools to streets, popular protests over employment and pensions, and continued military dictatorships that have limited freedom for ordinary people. These series of issues have not been addressed. The 2023 happiness index appears to be a statistical error.

We rank India 48th on measures of happiness including financial happiness, happiness related to job access and productivity, mental happiness. We absolutely reject the 126th position. This is stated in the report.

Finland topped the UN’s ranking for the sixth year in a row with a score of 7.8. Denmark and Iceland are second and third respectively. Afghanistan ranks last.
