Developed to help educators and academic institutions identify the presence of AI-generated text in student writing, Turnitin’s ability to detect AI writing is integrated into the system Turnitin which can be accessed through the learning management system.

Teaching staff do not need additional steps

Educators already using Turnitin do not require additional steps to activate it. More than 10,700 educational institutions and more than 2.1 million educators will be able to quickly and easily evaluate the presence of AI-generated text.

The Turnitin AI detector provides an evaluative measure of how many sentences in a submitted piece of writing could have been generated by artificial intelligence, which teachers can use to determine whether further review, investigation, or discussion with students is required.

They must be able to detect AI with very high certainty to assess the authenticity of students’ work and determine the best way of handling it,” said Turnitin CEO, Chris Caren, in a press statement, Monday (10/4).

“Equally important to them is that detection technology becomes part of their existing workflow, which we have followed up by integrating AI detection capabilities into the Turnitin solution.”

How Useful AI Devices Are

According to James Thorley, Turnitin Regional Vice President Asia Pacific, academics, faculty and university administrators in Southeast Asia are keenly aware of the potential impact of AI tools like ChatGPT in the region.

“Educators in Indonesia are aware that AI tools can impact the quality of student work and the learning experience. However, while the community perceives that AI tools can also be a force for good, high reliance on technology can hinder critical thinking and academic integrity which are core values for community development,” explains Thorley.
