“Victim of a falling concrete block”, a 22-year-old worker died Thursday, April 6 in Gonesse (Val-d’Oise), on the construction site of metro line 17. This death brings to five the number of victims of fatal work accidents on the Grand Paris Express site since 2020.

“He was freed by a crane, present on the site, but, despite all the care that was given to him, he died on the spot”said the firefighters, who intervened jointly with the department’s medical emergency services.

A medico-psychological cell was set up by the Samu for the members of the personnel present on the spot at the time of the accident, according to the firefighters.

18 serious accidents and 5 fatalities

Since the beginning of the project, 18 serious accidents have been recorded and five people have died. In February 2020, a 37-year-old worker died in Villejuif (Val-de-Marne) following an accident on the extension of line 14 of the Paris metro. The trial for manslaughter of his employers was held on Wednesday. The prosecution demanded 250,000 € in fines. The verdict will be pronounced on June 29.

The three other deaths recorded on this major construction site around the capital took place on the extension of line 16, in the department of Seine-Saint-Denis. In December 2020, a 41-year-old worker died after falling into a tunnel boring machine crusher. In January 2022, a 61-year-old man died crushed by a metal plate. In March 2023, a 58-year-old worker was crushed to death under a load of pallets.
