Not Britain: this is the country where tea is drunk the most

Tea is the second most consumed beverage worldwide, after water. In 2020, the FAO estimated that about 7 billion tons of tea were produced worldwide, and later we will see where they are produced. According to Statista Consumer Market Outlook, the global tea market is expected to reach $266.7 billion by 2025.

Although countries such as Great Britain or Morocco are associated with drinking tea in different and traditional forms, according to Statista data, the country where the most hot drink was drunk in 2022 is Turkey. When nine out of ten Turks said they regularly drink tea.

In second place is Kenya, a major producer and exporter of tea, with 83% of respondents saying they regularly drink tea. Meanwhile, the UK ranked slightly lower with 59 per cent of people saying they drink tea. Although this is still high, it is about ten percent lower than the neighboring country, Ireland.

Above both are India, Morocco and Pakistan with 72%, 80% and 83%, respectively.

And who benefits from this? Like many things, China tea is also the leading producer. The Chinese tea market is valued at nearly $100 billion, more than six times the size of second-ranked India with total sales of $15.7 billion. Japan, the United States and Brazil are also in the top five.
