Roman Polanski returns to the cinema with his new film “The Officer and the Spy” on the Dreyfus case

by time news

The Dreyfus affair is one of the most sensational judicial errors in history, which took place in France between 1894 and 1906, which saw the protagonist of the French Jewish soldier Alfred Dreyfus, unjustly accused of being a spy and then tried for high treason. Dreyfus steadfastly upheld his innocence by fighting against an entire nation. His case had a considerable media coverage by dividing public opinion of the time, between those who claimed his innocence and those who believed him guilty. The film starts on January 5, 1895, when Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a promising officer, is demoted and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island on charges of spying on behalf of Germany. Among the witnesses of this humiliation is Georges Picquart, who will later be promoted to head of the Statistics Section, the same unit of the military counter-intelligence that had assembled the charges against Dreyfus. But when Picquart learns what kind of secrets were being handed over to the Germans, he is drawn into a dangerous spiral of deceit and corruption that will put not only his honor but his life at risk. The cast includes names like Emmanuelle Seigner, Jean Dujardin, Louis Garrel, Mathieu Amalric. On the big screen from Thursday 21 November.
