From May 1, 2023, the price of electricity used up to 700 kWh will be 1 som. Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Akylbek Japarov signed the resolution on April 14.
The current price is 77 cents.

In case of using more than 700 kWh, the previous price of 2 soms 16 coins will be kept. And for the vulnerable population, up to 700 kWh will remain the same as the previous 50 cents. In the resolution, the “unlimited” tariff offered to the population has been reduced from 5.04 soms to 3 soms 28 tiymans.

“Measures taken in connection with the increase of tariffs are necessary to ensure energy security of the country and to continuously supply the population with electricity in the conditions of dynamic growth of consumption,” said the information released by the Cabinet of Ministers.

President Sadyr Japarov announced a 30% increase in electricity prices from May 1 in order to increase the resilience of the energy sector to crises. The government warns that the electricity tariff will continue to increase depending on inflation.

Kyrgyzstan cannot cover the domestic demand for electricity and is forced to import it. It was said that the changes being made to the tariff policy will allow for the renewal of outdated energy equipment. Currently, more than 80% of energy equipment is old.

In Kyrgyzstan this year, in the middle of January, it was very cold, and due to the increased consumption of electricity, the authorities had to turn off the lights one after another.

When Kyrgyzstan combines all its energy capacities, it currently has 15 bln. produces electricity per kWh. At the same time, consumption is 18 bln. kW, if the capacity is sufficient, it can be more than that. 60% of the produced energy is sold to the population, 40% to industrial and commercial enterprises. Since the light sold to the public is sold at a price lower than its cost, its cost is financed from the state budget. (ZKo)
