The leader of the largest faction in the European Parliament (EP) called for the development of new, tougher EU sanctions in response to a possible Russian military invasion of Ukraine. “The fact is that more than 100 thousand heavily armed soldiers are deployed on the borders of Ukraine … Therefore, we must prepare for the most difficult issues, and this means that in Europe … a war may start again,” said the head of the European People’s Party (EPP) faction Manfred Weber on the air of the German media company NDR on Thursday 16 December.

The European Union must respond to such a decision by Russian President Vladimir Putin with radical economic measures, Weber explained. Among other things, we can talk about the exclusion of the Russian Federation from the international banking system, as well as the refusal to commission the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, the politician said.

Weber: Using military force as a political tool is taboo in Europe

“We must clearly explain to Vladimir Putin that if he uses the military and war as a political instrument, which has been taboo in Europe since World War II, … there will be severe economic consequences,” the head of the European Conservative faction stressed. Manfred Weber added that he cannot imagine the launch of Nord Stream 2 “if Putin starts a war.”

The situation on the border between Russia and Ukraine will be one of the main topics at the EU summit, which will be held in Brussels on the same day and will be the last in the outgoing year. According to NATO, the Russian Federation could pull up to the border with Ukraine from 75 thousand to 100 thousand soldiers and officers.
