“The Nahal Tzafit disaster: Final report submitted after preparatory activities cease”

by time news

The final report of the “Government Inspection Committee for the Prevention of Disasters During the Activity of Pre-Military Preparatory Schools” was submitted on Friday, two years after its establishment and five years after the tragedy in Nahal Tzfit, where nine girls and a boy died during a training trip to the Bnei Zion Pre-Military Preparatory School. Retired Judge Shlomit Vaskerog, who was in the minority, wrote in the report that if no action is taken, the activities of preparatory schools must stop until necessary changes are made. The committee’s conclusions were not surprising and consistent with the interim report. The judge emphasized that creating a safer system is crucial for the future. The rest of the committee’s conclusions included supporting the continuance of preparatory schools under the supervision of several bodies. The report’s timing was right before the last hearing in the trial of Nahal Tzafit, held in the Beer Sheva court, and following another flood that caused the death of Ma’ayan and Sahar Asor.

The “Government Inspection Committee for the Prevention of Disasters During the Activity of Pre-Military Preparatory Schools” submitted its final report today (Friday), two years after it was established and five years after the disaster in Nahal Tzfit, in which nine girls and a boy perished on a training trip to the Bnei Zion Pre-Military Preparatory School. The chairman of the committee, retired judge Shlomit Vaskerog, who was in the minority, wrote in the report: “In the absence of adopting one of the proposed options, the activities of the preparatory schools must be stopped, until a necessary settlement is reached.”

The conclusions of the report are not surprising and are indeed consistent with the interim report. “During the administration of the test, I also made it clear to the parents that the vote for ‘guilty’ is not out of the question
The authority given to us, and the main thing is to create a more correct safety system in the future, so that those who come to fill the position in the future, their conduct will change,” the judge wrote.

She also added in her words that “if at the end of the inspection we returned to the voluntary arrangement – we did not fix anything. Those who were appointed instead of those who were supposed to create a required safety system will be able to continue to behave as before. From this point of view, I personally failed in the mission.” The timing of the conclusions comes after another flood that caused the death of the late Ma’ayan and Sahar Asor and before the last hearing in the trial of Nahal Tzafit, which is being held in the Beer Sheva court.

The other members of the committee, Maj. Gen. Gershon HaCohen and former director general of the Ministry of Settlements Avi Naim, do not support freezing the activities of the preparatory schools, but support the rest of the committee’s conclusions, as stated in the final report. The conclusions of the three members of the committee are to continue the conduct of the preparatory schools, but under the supervision of several Bodies.
