In an attempt to reduce queues at state hospitals, the government of São Paulo announced the health regionalization program, which will have the support of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). According to state management, the objective is to optimize services, expanding service offerings and reducing queues. The articulation will be made by the regional health departments. Currently, the State has 17 units throughout the territory. Eleuses Paiva, Secretary of Health, said that, currently, it is difficult to measure the size of queues in the State, but that, with the concentration, it will be easier to estimate, understanding the situation and demands of each region of the State of São Paulo. “The problem is that each municipality also has its own queue. Most hospitals also have their own queue. So, in reality, we don’t know the demand that we really have and the size of the queues in the State of São Paulo. With regionalization, making regional queues and these queues being publicized, so that the citizen knows where he is in the queue and the speed with which he will be attended to”, said Paiva.

In the announcement, made at Palácio dos Bandeirantes, with the participation of mayors, the governor Tarcisio Gomes de Freitas (Republicans) placed the measure as a priority and classified the moment as a milestone for the health of the State. “The regionalization of Health, without a doubt, will bring optimization, effectiveness, efficiency”, he said. It is not yet known how much will be disbursed for the project, but management claims that the idea is to reduce expenses and establish partnerships with the private sector. For Paiva, initially it will be necessary to expand the dialogues with the city halls and that these conversations are expected to start in the month of May
