Hubert Hurkacz has no reason to be satisfied. It hasn’t been this bad in almost two years!

by time news

Hubert Hurkacz lost on Thursday in the third round of the ATP 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo to the Italian Jannik Sinner 6:3, 6:7, 1:6. This result will have serious consequences for the Pole, who will record another drop in the ranking on Monday.

A year ago in Monaco, the best Polish tennis player reached the quarter-finals, so he had 180 ranking points to defend in the current edition. Unfortunately, in this year’s edition he was eliminated in the third round, which means that he will lose 90 points from his previous achievements on Monday.

This is not the only consequence of Hubert’s early elimination in Monte Carlo (and unsuccessful performances in earlier tournaments). In three days, our tennis player will drop two places in the standings and will be ranked number fifteen. The last time it was equally low was on June 28, 2021 (he was 18th), i.e. almost two years ago. After a successful Wimbledon, he moved up to eleventh place and since then he has never dropped below fourteenth place.

In the ranking, which will be announced on Monday, the Pole will be overtaken by two tennis players who … did not improve their scores last week. The first one will be British Cameron Norrie, who lost in Monte Carlo already in the first match, but a year ago he was eliminated just as quickly, so he did not record any losses. Similarly as Rafael Nadalwhich neither in 2022 nor in the current one in Monaco took off.

However, Hubert’s losses are nothing compared to the loss of points suffered by the Greek Stefanosa Tsitsipasa. Last year’s winner this time was eliminated in the quarter-finals, thus losing as many as 820 points. As a consequence, in a few days it will drop from third to fifth place.

The next tournament in which Hurkacz will take part will be the thousandth in Madrid, which will start on April 24. A year ago, in the capital of Spain, our tennis player reached the quarter-finals, so if he does not want to record another loss of points, he will have to at least repeat this result.

In turn, from May 8, tennis players will compete in Rome. If the Pole starts in the competition, he will finally have the opportunity to improve his achievements – he played only one match in Italy last year.
