To stroll ? It is now prohibited. In Italy, the town hall of Portofino, this ultra-touristy town near Genoa, wants to prevent people from stopping to walk in busy places in the city, in order to avoid congestion. The decree, reported by the Italian journal Corriere della Seraevokes “problems of traffic fluidity” and the dangers linked to too many people “compared to the available surface”.

According to the Italian newspaper, these restrictions came into force on April 1 and are due to last until October 15. In concrete terms, it is forbidden to stop between 10.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the areas of the center of Portofino most frequented by tourists, that is to say those overlooking the sea. Those who do not respect this ban risk a fine between 68 and 275 euros.

“Being able to make the most of”

With the Corriere della Sera, the mayor justified this radical decision by the flow of tourists who arrive every day in his city. This rule aims to “enable all tourists who arrive in Portofino to be able to make the most of the village, but also to manage security”, while a rescue operation would prove difficult in the midst of a crowd of people.

Portofino is not the only town trying to combat overtourism. More and more, quotas are put in place in very touristic places in order to regulate flows.
