Rapprochement with Cairo will be positive for the Libyan file.. This is how Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu commented during his latest talks with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, in Turkey.
Davutoglu was keen to stress that the views of the two countries have become largely identical regarding the Libyan file, the approach to a solution, and the necessity of holding general elections in the country this year. However, it is no secret that Cairo and Ankara may think differently about some methods related to approaching the solution in Libya.

Regarding his question about the Mediterranean file, which formed a major basis for disputes between Cairo and Ankara in the past years, Davutoğlu replied that during his meeting with Sameh Shoukry, the issue of the maritime jurisdiction areas was not addressed. However, he pointed out that “Cairo respects the areas of maritime jurisdiction of Turkey,” noting that “Egypt will benefit more from cooperation between the two countries regarding the areas of maritime jurisdiction.”

In response to a question about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s meeting with his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the Turkish Foreign Minister said: “There is no decision in this regard yet, and steps will be taken within the framework of Erdogan’s and Sisi’s opinions and instructions.” Pointing out that the upcoming meeting “will not be delayed for long,” but the location where the meeting will take place has not been determined.
On the other hand, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry confirmed that the two sides plan to hold a summit at the level of presidents in the next few years on a number of issues of common interest between the two countries, including the situation in Libya, the eastern Mediterranean and the Palestinian territories. For years, Turkey and Egypt have been on opposite sides of the Libyan file, fiercely competing for influence in Libya and supporting the local parties by all means to ensure a role for the two countries in the regional and geopolitical balances in the region.
Observers believe that the Egyptian-Turkish rapprochement will be central to the Libyan file, especially with regard to the political track, elections, and the unification of the military institution, given the great influence of Egypt and Turkey on the Libyan parties.
