In the 2014-2020 financial period of the European Union, the Administration of the Vilnius District Local Government started the implementation of the project “Development of the Social Housing Fund in the Vilnius District Local Government”. The value of the project is almost EUR 3 million, of which EUR 1.4 million was allocated from the local government budget, and EUR 1.6 million was allocated from the European Union funds.
During the implementation of the project, 50 social premises will be furnished, of which 4 will be adapted for persons with physical disabilities.
The construction of social housing in the town of Mickuny was completed in December 2022. A two-story residential building in the town of Mickuny was built on the site of a former school building. It has an area of 786 sq m. and 16 one- and four-room apartments, 2 apartments are adapted for people with physical disabilities. Social flats are equipped with the necessary equipment, i.e. electric cookers (with ovens), hoods and kitchen furniture.

The construction of social housing in Mickuny cost approximately EUR 1.5 million. The contribution of the local government is 50 percent. The remaining part is co-financing from EU funds in accordance with the executive action No. 08.1.2-CPVA-R-408 “Development of the social housing fund”. The local government also allocated funds for the purchase of furniture.
Currently, the construction of social housing is also underway in the city of Niemenczyn. 15 apartments are being built here. Completion of construction is planned for the second half of 2023. Also, during the implementation of the project, the local government planned to purchase 19 apartments. 17 apartments have already been purchased.
According to the Department of Economics and Property, the Vilnius District Self-Government annually draws up lists of residents who are entitled to subsidies for renting an apartment. On the list approved in October 2022, 201 people (families) are waiting for a flat. Among those waiting are single people and young families with children and others.
In 2022, in order to increase the availability of social housing, the Vilnius District Government purchased 2 social housing units in the villages of Wojdaty and Biała Waka (Pogiry commune). The local government allocated the purchased flats to persons and families who are waiting in line and are entitled to rent subsidies. In 2022, flats were provided to 10 persons/families.
