Heavy fighting also continued on Sunday. At least 56 civilians and dozens of soldiers are said to have been killed. The violence stems from a power struggle between the army and a powerful paramilitary group.
In Sudan, the army and a powerful paramilitary group have been engaged in heavy fighting in many parts of the country since Saturday morning. It is a new escalation of the political crisis in the second largest country in sub-Saharan Africa. Sudan has seen the fall of a dictator, a coup and mass anti-military protests in recent years. These are opposed to handing over power to democratic forces – and are now at war with each other. The fighting has the potential to escalate into a civil war. Both the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have tens of thousands of soldiers and bases across the country.
