Volkswagen’s next generation ID electric cars are getting a more powerful motor. ‘AP550’ rear-wheel drive configuration to launch later this year with 282bhp

Volkswagen calls this a “major challenge”, but it is suspected that it really means “giant headache”. No, not reconfiguring the infotainment system to make any kind of human sense, instead squeezing more electricity out of the same available chassis space.

So welcome to the next generation of the ID family powertrain. The so-called ‘AP550’ which, unfortunately, does not represent a 550 horsepower boost. It is a new power unit offering 282bhp and up to 406lb ft of torque from a single engine. There’s also the longer-range carrot being swung around, though nothing specific has been revealed on that front.

VW has developed a new stator that features an “improved number of windings and a larger wire cross-section”. As any self-respecting EV enthusiast knows, it’s all about improved lap numbers.

Elsewhere, the rotor itself gets more powerful magnets with higher load capacities, an upgraded inverter better suited to handling more power, and an overhaul of the entire cooling system.

Although VW has not said on which MEB platform model this new drivetrain will debut, we do know that it will be launched in late 2023. “Since the available space has not changed, we were obliged to develop a new engine that achieves significant improvements in performance and efficiency despite being subject to the same constraints,” explains VW’s head of powertrain Karsten Bennewitz.

“The result shows that we managed to reduce the use of raw materials and, at the same time, obtain a considerable increase in the efficiency of the vehicle.” Now to increase the infotainment efficiency.
