A video posted on TikTok gained repercussions when its author claimed that her cramps improved with changing the type of absorbent. In the content, the user associated the increase in cramps and their intensity due to the substances used in the blue coloring part of the hygiene accessory.

She also claimed that changing pads without these substances/coloring would have had the opposite effect, decreasing the amount and intensity of pain.

But after all, do the substances used in coloring absorbents have the capacity for such an effect? According to experts, the answer is no.

“Disposable pads are made up of a polyethylene film, to which cotton, silicone paper and thermoplastic adhesives are added. Most brands have a blue marking just to demarcate the places where there is a higher concentration of menstrual flow”, says the pharmaceutical Julia Rampani, specialist in integrative health.

In addition to these components, gynecologist and obstetrician Igor Padovesi, from Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, adds that many brands add dyes, fragrances and odor neutralizers in the composition of such accessories.

Juliana claims that such coloration has no connection with the appearance or intensity of cramps, since the symptom occurs by the release of prostaglandin, a substance that causes the contraction of the uterus to eliminate the endometrial layer (inner layer of the uterus), in the form of bleeding. .

Igor continues, saying that there is no evidence or reasonableness in this hypothesis and explains that, “it would be necessary to have absorption of some substance at significant levels to cause colic or other symptoms”, which does not occur in pads.

Thus, there would also be no possibility of increasing the menstrual flow, given that such an occurrence could be linked to a health problem, such as fibroids, endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Questioned by R7 Regarding the presence of the blue component, the sanitary pad brands Always and Intimus, two of the most sold in the country, communicated the following:

Always

“Always is intended to provide security, confidence and protection to all people who menstruate, so that they can do whatever they want. Always’ products undergo numerous evaluations before reaching consumers, with rigorous testing. All materials used in the composition of absorbents are safe and none causes or increases menstrual cramps, which are pelvic pains caused by the release of bleeding during the menstrual cycle, when the egg was not fertilized.

There is no reason to suspect that the materials used in Always tampons are causing discomforts such as menstrual cramps. The “blue product”, present in Always pads, is an indicator of the pads’ absorption zones. In addition, all Always products are dermatologically tested for registration in Brazil and, therefore, can only be marketed after this verification.
After almost 600,000 interviews with consumers, the brand even found that the biggest complaint is with leaks and the difficulty of identifying the ideal absorbent for each flow. In view of this, Always® wants to encourage people who menstruate to understand more about their body and their menstrual period, so that they can use the ideal product for the right protection, ending leaks. Therefore, it innovated the sanitary pad category by offering a new and more didactic way of choosing the ideal sanitary pad for each flow, body and time of the month, based on sizes, being the only brand that presents sanitary pads identified by sizes S, M, L , XG and XXL, which guarantee the best coverage, protection and comfort for every body type and flow”.

Intimate

“Intimus brand products are specially designed and developed to bring better comfort and convenience, before, during and after the menstrual period, and do not impact any flow induction during menstruation. All raw materials used in the construction of products are developed by our Research & Development team, assured by qualified suppliers and audited by our quality team. For the protection of our consumers, all raw materials and finished products undergo a rigorous safety assessment process by trained and certified professionals. Intimus products undergo numerous tests with consumers and specialized medical monitoring, in addition to meeting the requirements of national and international standards, as well as regulatory bodies, such as ANVISA.”

The professionals explain that there are no contraindications regarding the use of sanitary pads due to the risk of increased colic or flow, but warn of the possibility of allergies and topical dermatitis related to the composition, which can be worsened by local dampness and dampness.

For those who are more sensitive to these components, experts recommend alternatives, such as menstrual cups and reusable absorbent panties.
