DEBRIEFING – Pensions, currency, finance, independence of power and of the press: Étienne Chouard returns in this interview to the subjects and the deep issues that agitate France.

The question of freedom of expression is addressed: how to allow it to survive? The media, alas, no longer seem to guarantee its exercise: “instead of publicizing, they censor and only pass the propaganda of power”according to the professor of economics and retirement law.

Chouard also evokes the Munich Charter and the future of the profession of journalist. Can we imagine the development of a “constitutional protection” for the latter, “of citizen origin” ?

The aim would be to allow journalists to carry out their investigations and other functions with complete peace of mind and to stay away from the influence or domination of financial and political interests.

“Maximizing Virtue and Minimizing Vice”Who “exist in every individual”, is still possible, according to Chouard. Is this a hope reduced to a trickle these days, with regard to the disturbing excesses of the media sphere (invisibilization of certain themes, censorship…)?

In order to keep the hope of a favorable evolution in the future, the author of “Writing the constitution ourselves” (published by Talma) quotes Étienne de la Boétie: “So resolve to serve no more and you will be free.”
