The leader of the Tunisian Islamo-conservative Ennahdha movement, Rached Ghannouchi, 81, one of the main opponents of President Kais Saied, was arrested on Monday, his training said.
Ghannouchi, who headed the dissolved parliament in July 2021 in a coup by Saied, was arrested by a police force at his home in Tunis and “drove to an unknown location”, Ennahdha said in a statement. “Ennahdha denounces this extremely serious development and calls for the immediate release of Rached Ghannouchi,” added the movement.
Tunisian authorities did not immediately comment on the arrest. It comes after statements reported by the media, in which Ghannouchi allegedly said this weekend that Tunisia would be threatened with a “civil war” if political Islam, from which his party originated, were eradicated there.
Ghannouchi’s arrest took place at the time of iftar, the fast-breaking meal of Ramadan and a few hours before the celebration by the faithful of the sacred night “of destiny”.
