C’is a major change that could impact the daily lives of motorists in the Ile-de-France region. The maximum speed authorized on the Paris ring road could be lowered from 70 to 50 km/h from the end of 2024, with the establishment of the lane dedicated to carpooling and public transport.

“One of the possibilities is that when the reserved lanes are activated, we pass the entire ring road at 50 km / h”, indicated François Wouts, the director of the roads of the City of Paris, Monday, April 17 during the debate to launch the consultation on this town hall project planned as a legacy of the 2024 Olympic Games.

The other option considered by the town hall is to lower this speed to 50 km / h only “when the dedicated lane is active”, according to the presentation made in front of around sixty people.

Limit pollution and accidents

Intended to reduce pollution, this lane reserved for carpooling, taxis and public transport will indeed be activated on the left lane “during periods of traffic congestion”, i.e. in the morning from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. then in the evening from 3 p.m. 30 to 20 hours, “during the week and / or during weekends”, according to the starting proposal from the town hall.

With the lowering of the speed, the town hall, which has already lowered it from 50 to 30 km / h almost everywhere intra muros, wishes “to limit the risk of accident linked to too great a difference in speed with the right-hand lanes , in particular in the event of a change of lane”. According to the town hall, the median speed on the ring road, which records more than a million journeys every day, is around 50 km / h during the day, and between 30 and 45 km / h during rush hour. It goes up to just over 60 km/h at night.

In addition to the speed and timetables of the reserved lane, the points submitted for online consultation, open until May 28, are the list of vehicles authorized to travel in the reserved lane, and the measures to promote carpooling.

90% negative reviews

The town hall led by the socialist Anne Hidalgo will decide this summer, after publication of the report. The opening of the reserved lane is scheduled for the end of 2024 for its northern part, that of the southern part (between the gates of Bercy and Sèvres) being planned for mid-2025.

During the Olympic Games, the “Olympic Way”, which also concerns two sections of motorways managed by the State in the Paris suburbs, on the A1 and the A13, will allow athletes, rescuers and officials to go from the sites of accommodation to those of competition in a safe and fast way.

By changing the use of the ring road, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary at the end of April, the town hall is not seeking “to reduce the number of displaced people, but to reduce the number of vehicles used to move them”, affirmed the assistant (EELV) for mobility David Belliard. According to the host of the evening, 90% of the comments posted since Monday morning on the consultation site have issued a negative opinion vis-à-vis the project.
