Haripad: The Animal Husbandry Department and the Gram Panchayat on Thursday killed 8,500 ducks in Karuvatta where bird flu was confirmed. There were four groups of five each. Action was taken to kill 15,600 ducks. But about 7,000 ducks have already died. These have been hidden by the farmers themselves.

The ducks were killed west of Kankamuttil Jangar Kadavu. After adding wood and sugar, the diesel was poured and burned. On Thursday, ducks raised by farmers Santosh, Anto, Attukadavil Raju and Panampadayil Harikuttan in Pullampather were killed. Kochuparambil Devarajan, Chinchalil Chandran and Naluchirayil Appa had 25,650 ducks. Of these, about 5,000 ducks have already died. Samples of these have been taken for testing but no results have been obtained. If the infection is confirmed, they will also have to be killed.

As a natural disaster, money for killing ducks should be made available from the Disaster Relief Fund. However, the money for the item that hid the ducks in this manner last year has not yet been paid to the Karuvatta Gram Panchayat. The panchayat spent Rs 2.18 lakh last year. The funds were utilized from the own funds. The Gram Panchayat President S.K. Suresh said.
