China recorded growth of 4.5% in the first quarter, following the lifting of draconian health restrictions which had hampered the world’s second largest economy last year, according to official statistics released on Tuesday by Beijing. A marked acceleration expected, after the 2.9% recorded in the last quarter of 2022, and whose strength exceeds the predictions of economists, driven by the recovery in consumption which is growing with the arrival of spring.

Retail sales jumped 10.6% in March, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (BNS) as the Chinese find restaurants, shops and travel after a year of repeated confinements.
