It is “sure” that an agreement can be found with the right on this “strong” text, frozen for a month against a backdrop of social discontent. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin pleaded on Tuesday for a resumption of parliamentary consideration of his immigration bill.

“I want there to be a strong bill, I want it to be the text I proposed” and not new texts, said Gérald Darmanin on LCI.

Emmanuel Macron had however announced on March 23 during his television interview the division into “several texts” of this bill to keep only the most consensual aspects, de facto postponing its examination to the Senate – controlled by the right – originally scheduled for the end of March.

“We have to move forward. The French need a strong text on immigration to fight against irregular immigration,” said Gérald Darmanin.

Subject revived by Macron during his speech

“The Prime Minister is discussing with the parliamentary forces (…) I am always among those who think that a large part of the Republicans can support us”, he judged. “I’m sure with the Republicans we can agree on this issue,” he insisted.

During his televised address the day before, the President of the Republic had revived the subject and promised to strengthen “the control of illegal immigration, while better integrating those who join our country”.

It thus took up the two main aspects of the bill carried by the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Labor Olivier Dussopt, before its division was announced in the midst of political fever on pensions: on the one hand, measures to facilitate and accelerate the expulsion of foreigners who constitute a threat to public order, on the other, regularization measures for certain undocumented workers in sectors in “tension”. On RTL on Tuesday, Olivier Dussopt also set the objective of resuming the debate “before the summer”.
