FDP debate about nuclear fusion: will-o’-the-wisps, no beacons

Dhe world was a different world in terms of energy when the Brecon Beacons National Park was established in Wales in 1957. Its logo showed a flame, after which the eponymous mountain range is said to be named: beacons, which are said to have warned of attackers in ancient times. But there is no evidence of this, and since the carbon dioxide production was not suitable as a flagship for a national park, the park’s logo was abolished on Monday. He now goes by a Welsh name.

It is recognized that fires should be avoided in view of climate change to generate energy, but evidence of alternatives is not always important in the political discussion. Nuclear power is a key energy in the transformation to renewables, said Christian Dürr, leader of the FDP parliamentary group. And said: “Nuclear fusion produces stable, environmentally friendly energy.” One of the first reactors should be built in this country. “To do this, we should de-bureaucratize the use of nuclear fusion.”

At first he would like to purify the laws of nature, but others have already failed. Even fusion supporters like Constantin Häfner, head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology, considers an early realization to be illusory, as he told the Riffreporter portal. Fundamental questions are open, there will be a demonstration power plant in 2045 at the earliest. He advises FDP Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger, who sees it differently: fusion could possibly be used as early as 2033, she said in December, when a basic experiment in the USA was the first time a little more energy free than was used.

Fusion start-ups took advantage of the moment, the head of the Munich company Marvel described this as “comparable to the taming of fire 700,000 years ago”. Dürr was informed on Twitter that nuclear fusion is actually already actively driving the energy transition: namely the solar fire that drives the solar systems.
