After four, five or six years in line, graduating students at most secondary schools in the Netherlands get the chance to disrupt their school on their last day of school. They throw a big party in the auditorium or transform the school into a student association.

‘This day symbolizes the end of their school careers,’ says 17-year-old Janouke van Meerveld, chairman of the Landelijke Aktie Komitee Scholieren (LAKS). ‘For one day, students have power over the school for a while. ‘Graduates’ often come up with the most creative and crazy ideas. For example, on TikTok I saw a school that had been converted into a fire station.’
