What to remember from the Agreement?

Adopted by consensus at the twelfth WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) held in Geneva from 12 to 17 June 2022, the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement establishes new binding multilateral rules aimed at reducing harmful subsidies , a key factor in the general depletion of fish stocks around the world. In addition, it recognizes the needs of developing and least-developed countries (LDCs) and establishes a Fund for the provision of technical assistance and capacity-building activities to help these countries meet the obligations. The Agreement prohibits support for illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, prohibits support for fishing overfished stocks and ends subsidies for unregulated high seas fishing. At CM12, Members also agreed to continue negotiations on outstanding issues, with a view to making recommendations by CM13 on additional provisions that would further improve the disciplines of the Agreement.
