More than every second person with Parkinson’s disease shows neuropsychiatric symptoms. However, depression, psychosis, dementia and other mental illnesses are often overlooked or even ignored by the patients for a long time. What should doctors notice? And how can those affected and their families be helped?
A whole range of mental disorders can occur in the course of Parkinson’s disease. Sometimes the personality changes precede the motor signs of the syndrome by years, reports a team led by Dr. Daniel Weintraub from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In a review, the authors provide tips on diagnosis and therapy for the six most important diseases in Parkinson’s disease.
