She calls for a ban on all bisphenols. consumer association UFC-What to choose claims, this Wednesday, that all of these substances widely used in the manufacture of plastics be banned “in the most risky everyday products”.

One of the main problems lies in the fact that bisphenols are still widely used in products intended for children such as water bottles or teething rings. But children are not the only ones affected. Bisphenol, which is an endocrine disruptor, is also present in products such as tights, glasses, cans (in all those tested by the UFC) or soda cans.

Bisphenol A is subject to strict regulations, notably prohibited in baby bottles and food containers. But outside this framework, this family of products is still widely used by manufacturers and the quantities found in the UFC tests are large.

“Lax” regulations

The European Chemicals Agency recalls the serious consequences of the use of bisphenols. These can include miscarriages, sexual and reproductive dysfunctions, cognitive delays.

Regarding babies, the UFC considers it “scandalous that too many manufacturers have not yet taken measures commensurate with the potential risks induced by these compounds”. Teething rings, for example, are chewed for many hours a day. However, “endocrine disruptors are particularly harmful at the early stages of child development”.

UFC-Que Choisir denounces “lax” European regulations. Admittedly, it prohibits bisphenol A in baby products. But the range is still very wide. Food packaging is not affected at all. “The ability of endocrine disruptors to act at very low doses would justify a ban even at trace levels”, warns the association.
