“Rising Trends of Young Adult Drug Users In 2022: The Number Increases to 1.2 Million, More Males Contributing, Antiparasitic Drugs like Anti-Scabies Permethrin and Ivermectin are in High Demand”

The number of young adult drug users in 2022 was 1.2 million. Although there are more female users, the number of male users has grown more. Anti-scabies drugs in particular had more young users, writes the Pharmaceutical Key Figures Foundation.

The number of young adults, defined as persons between the ages of 18 and 26, who received a medicine that belongs to the basic package at least once in 2022, was 1.2 million.

This corresponds to 65% of all persons in this age group. With 740,000 users, there are almost 1.5 times as many women as men (500,000) who use a medicine. Even without hormonal contraceptives, which are part of the basic package up to the age of 21, the number of female users is still 1.4 times higher.

A clear riser in 2022 will be the antiparasitic agents, especially the anti-scabies permethrin and the antiworm agent ivermectin, applied orally. Last year, the indication for ivermectin, which previously fell outside the basic package, was expanded to include treatment of scabies.

By 2022, the number of young adult users of permethrin nearly doubled to 40,000 and the number of ivermectin users increased to nearly 10,000. This is in line with the sharp increase in the number of scabies cases, especially among young people up to the age of 24, as research institute Nivel found in October 2022.
