With the apparent calm brought about by the establishment of a constitutional government in 1966, art in the Dominican Republic it continued to expand and seek new directions. The need to create a majestic setting to exhibit art in its greatest splendor was realized on August 16, 1973 with the inauguration of the Santo Domingo National Theater, today named Eduardo Brito.

The idea began to take shape in 1970 and the president at that time, Joaquín Balaguer, appointed the construction of the theater to the architect Teófilo Carbonell, who toured Europe, the United States and Latin America a large number of buildings of this nature. to create a theater with all the facilities of the time.

50 years have passed since that inauguration and the building continues as scenic symbol of the hundreds of concerts, musicals, plays and ballets that he has presented.

As was done at its inauguration, a National Ballet Festival has been announced to celebrate this 50th anniversary with the presentation of the staging of “Gala Premiere” by Ballet Concierto Dominicano, One of its founders is Carlos Veitía, current director of the National Theater and “Estaciones” of the Dominican National Ballet, now directed by Stefany Bauger, to be presented from May 5 to 13.

During the announcement of the celebration of these five decades, the Minister of Culture, Milagros Germán, in her speech asked to see culture as a basic component of the quality of life of the entire population, the identity, inclusion and democracy of our country should be reflected in the National Theater programming.

“Throughout these years, the country has been growing and perfecting its political system and we have seen the transformation of an increasingly democratic National Theater, where all the manifestations of popular art, both in music, dance and theater They have their space”, explained Germán.

Carlos Veitia, general and artistic director of the National Theater, stated: “It is a luxury to start the 50th anniversary festivities with presentations that mark the trajectory and evolution of ballet and dance on national soil, thanks to the support of our sponsors and the Ministry of Culture for allowing us to exhibit an evening that brings together the best, delivering the sensitivity and sweetness of both manifestations of scenic art”.

In addition to Germán Veitía, the head table was made up of Jenny Podesta, president of the Friends of the National Theater Foundation; Sarah Esteva- Director of the Dominican Concert Ballet; Stephanie Bauger, director of the Dominican National Ballet and Marianela Sallent, director of Fine Arts.

“Gala Premiere” of the Dominican Concert Ballet, Directed by Sarah Esteva and Lisbell Piedra, it is choreographed by Carlos Veitia (“Anima Mobile”), Pablo Pérez (“Por una rosa”) and Ramón Oller (“Amanecer”).

In addition, as special guests, the principal dancers of the Miami City Ballet, Rainer Krenstetter and Tricia Albertson will participate. The Dominican National Ballet, of the General Directorate of Fine Arts, with its piece “Estaciones”, directed by Stephanie Bauger, broadens the expressive and technical horizon of its dancers and repertoire, together with the renowned choreographers, Marianela Boán and Annabelle López Ochoa.

The National Theater is made up of the Carlos Piantini Hall, which in its lower part called the “plata” has a capacity for 918 seated people, on the second floor or “balcony” it accommodates 589 seated people and the boxes 82 seated people, for a total of 1,589 people. The Ravelo Room has a capacity of 189 people and the Aida Bonnelly De Díaz Room has a capacity of 228 people.
