The consumer defense association is calling for tougher legislation in the face of the presence of bisphenols in many food packaging and baby products.

Bisphenol A has been banned from all food packaging since 2015 in France. The use of related molecules to replace this synthetic chemical substance, recognized as an endocrine disruptor, would however still be commonplace. At least that’s what the latest study by the consumer association UFC-Que Choisir, published this Wednesday, April 19, says. It reveals the presence of bisphenol in “more than a hundred food packaging or objects intended for babies».

Bisphenols belong to a family of molecules used in the manufacture of plastics and resins. They are suspected by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) of being endocrine disruptors, these molecules foreign to the body which permanently disrupt the hormonal functioning of living beings. The potential risks for human health are serious: miscarriages, sexual and reproductive dysfunctions, cognitive delays…

The results of the study are alarming. Six out of 14 baby bottles and cups tested, as well as 7 out of 12 teething rings, contain bisphenols. That’s nearly one in two baby products. Gold, “ endocrine disruptors are particularly harmful in the early stages of child development“, specifies the UFC-Que Choisir. These harmful components are also present in all cans and soda cans analyzed by the association. However, these molecules are transmitted directly from mother to child during pregnancy, “the placental barrier [n’offrant] to the fetus no protection».

Faced with this observation, the UFC-Que Choisir points the finger at European legislation “particularly lax“. In Europe, bisphenol A is only banned in baby products, “ignoring food packaging“. Even in France, the law would be too flexible since it authorizes the use of the 148 other bisphenols identified by ECHA. However, among them, the European Chemicals Agency has already identified 34 “dangerousfor human health. Confronted with this, “UFC-Que Choisir demands that the French and European health authorities prohibit any use of bisphenols in food packaging and products intended for children.»
