South Korean K-pop star Moonbin, a member of Astro, died Wednesday, April 19, at the age of 25. “Moonbin left our world unexpectedly, becoming a star in the sky”wrote in Korean the label Fantagio on its official account Twitter.
Without specifying the alleged causes of the singer’s death, the press release asks everyone to “refrain from speculative and malicious reporting” so that his family can pay homage to him and honor him in peace.
Citing police, local media reported that Moonbin was found unconscious in his apartment in Seoul’s upscale Gangnam district.
After also acting and modeling, Moonbin joined the label’s trainee program Fantagio at an early age and debuted with Astro in February 2016, which then had six members. He also performed with a subgroup called Moonbin & Sanha. Her sister, Moon Sua, is also a K-pop singer, member of a girl group called Billlie.
Several deaths of young K-pop stars
Several other young K-pop stars have died in recent years, including two suspected suicides in a month in 2019. Singer, Goo Hara, killed herself after being victimized by « revenge porn » by a disgruntled ex-boyfriend. Her friend Sulli, also a K-pop star, killed herself after attacks accusing her, among other things, of not wearing a bra.
In the K-pop industry, stars are recruited by agencies from an early age. Their lives, subject to strict control, are then punctuated by intense music and dance training.
South Korea has one of the highest suicide death rates in the world which, according to recent figures from the South Korean government, is among the leading causes of death among people under 40.
