Wolfgang Bartosch will again act as chairman of the election committee for the election of the coming ÖFB president. The head of the Styrian national football association confirmed this to the APA on Thursday. Bartosch was already the chairman of the election committee in 2021, when Gerhard Milletich was chosen to succeed Leo Windtner. Since the resignation of the Burgenlander, Lower Austria’s head of state, Johann Gartner, has been running the business on an interim basis.

The new ÖFB boss will be chosen at a federal general meeting, which will probably be held in September. There is no official information on possible candidates from the association. The Carinthian state president Klaus Mitterdorfer is one of the candidates – the 57-year-old said in this context just a few days ago to the “Kleine Zeitung”: “It makes sense to think seriously about it.”

The name Roland Schmid is also rumored. The entrepreneur and Vienna Vice President lost the 2021 election to Milletich and in 2019 the Rapid presidential election to Martin Bruckner. Immediately after Milletich’s departure, Schmid announced that a candidacy for ÖFB boss was “not currently up for discussion for me”. The Bundesliga supervisory board chairman Philip Thonhauser is said to have ambitions, but according to the current status he would be far from a majority among the state presidents.

The hot phase of the presidential search begins on April 28 in Vienna, when the election committee is constituted following an ÖFB presidium meeting. According to his own statements, Bartosch will “definitely not be a candidate”, the Styrian sees his main task as laying the basis for a smooth and conflict-free election procedure.

Publicly displayed trench warfare, as has often been seen in recent years, should be avoided this time. “It is the general will that, despite opposing approaches, one should try to find a common denominator,” explained Bartosch.
