Former President Alejandro Toledo’s lawyer, Roberto Su, reported that his client will turn himself in to US justice on Friday, April 21, in compliance with the provisions of Judge Thomas S. Hixson.
“On Friday, former President Toledo is going to make himself available to the judge. As Judge Hixson has ordered, he is going to make himself available to the American authorities so that the extradition can continue, ”he told RPP.
He argued that the former president “had a habeas corpus that in second instance had not been resolved at the Court level in California and apart from a request for precautionary measure that was dismissed”, for which Toledo’s defense requested an extraordinary review that allowed a period of 14 days to present their allegations.
He specified that, in accordance with the provisions of Judge Hixson, once this period had expired, “a new hearing would not be held, but he would simply issue a decree to execute (the extradition process).”
The lawyer stated that it is not the will of his client to flee the United States or seek asylum in an embassy. “He has been complying with what the judge has ordered,” he said.
Regarding the crimes that he is accused of, the lawyer said that the former president “has never acknowledged participation or knowledge of the criminal activities that Josef Maiman has carried out with Jorge Barata.”
“The former president has repeatedly told me that he does not know what has been the management that each minister in his sector has given. He has trusted his collaborators, as he calls it, and if there are any acts of corruption, the president does not know, he does not know, “said the lawyer.
In this sense, he pointed out that, once he arrives in Peru, Toledo will follow due process and will not hold other people responsible since he has no knowledge of what happened.
Finally, he ruled that during the trial, after the accusation control stage, it will be possible to see the material evidence that will confront the accusations of two collaborators.
