Alsace outside the Grand-Est is obviously not for tomorrow. President Emmanuel Macron closed the door to the prospects of returning to a region that would only include the Bas and Haut-Rhin, in an interview published Thursday by Latest news from Alsace (DNA).
“I want Alsatians […] know that the Grand-Est region brings them a lot. This is particularly the case for transport and land use planning. It is more than what Alsace could have done alone, ”argues the head of state. “We must try to maintain solidarity between our territories […] There should be no divisive debate on these subjects,” he concludes.
This clarification comes as the European Community of Alsace (CEA), the community which has brought together the departmental councils of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin since 2021, voted almost unanimously last week for a resolution asking “ the creation of a fully-fledged Alsace region” in order to consolidate regional and departmental competences into a single regional entity.
Last December, ten deputies of the majority announced the filing of a bill aimed at bringing Alsace out of the Grand-Est. Emmanuel Macron himself, during the 2022 presidential campaign, spoke out for a regional “right to differentiation”.
