Alliance between SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA and the Embassy of Mexico to care for the mental health of the Mexican population in Spain
The Confederation has signed a collaboration agreement with the Embassy of Mexico in Spain to contribute to the improvement of the mental health of the Mexican population, through the implementation of the Mental Health Window, in an act headed by the ambassador of Mexico, Quirino Ordaz Coppel.
The Confederation has signed this agreement coinciding with the opening of the Mental Health Window, a pioneering service promoted by the Embassy, which will assist the Mexican population in Spain in matters of personal and emotional well-being. In this way, the entity will provide the Embassy and its network of professionals with guidance in the design and implementation of preventive services and mental health problems that mainly affect the migrant population living in Spain. It will also offer information and support, and will share the best practices and information resources that the Confederation has developed in terms of mental health promotion and care in Spain.
As expressed during the presentation ceremony of the Ventanilla Nel González ZapicoPresident of the Confederation, “The alliance with the Embassy is the first to be adopted with a foreign country to contribute to improving the quality of life of people with a mental episode or disorder in Spain.” The event was also attended by the president of the Madrid Mental Health Federation, Olga Real.
The ambassador of Mexico, Quirino Ordaz Coppel, led the opening act of the Ventanilla. For his part, the head of the Institute for Mexicans Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gutierrez Reyeswitnessed the signing of the collaboration agreement between the Embassy and the SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA Confederation, and delivered the appointments as consulting specialists to the group of Mexican psychologists who collaborate in this program.
The Mental Health Window in Spain that has just been launched is the first physical and in-person mental health care window, outside the United States, that the Government of Mexico offers to its compatriots abroad. The new consular assistance service will support Mexican communities residing in Spain and will cover components such as information, training, prevention and mental health care.
Through this new service, the Embassy will offer workshops and video capsules with preventive information on mental health; a platform with local information resources; and a protocol for initial care, crisis containment and timely channeling of Mexican people who require accompaniment derived from a mental health problem.
“This program is a milestone in consular assistance, since in addition to continuing to protect the rights and physical integrity of our compatriots, they are provided with an effective and co-responsible response to their emotional needs”pointed out Ordaz Coppel in his speech.
Luis Gutierrez highlighted “the importance of starting this program in Spain, the country with the third largest Mexican community abroad, in addition to other financial, educational and empowerment programs that will be offered in the coming months”.
For the Confederation, convinced of the power of synergies, this alliance represents an opportunity to improve people’s mental health through complementary work with public and private actors, a line of work reflected in its Strategic Plans, which it has promoted for years and which translates projects such as ‘Diagnosis of Alliances of the Confederation SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA’whose conclusions can be consulted at this link.
